Truck Driving Tips- Making the Most of Time Spent on the Road

Truck Driving Tips from Bay and Bay Transportation

Truck driving is the name of the game at Bay & Bay Transportation. Unlike many other occupations, it’s much harder to multitask or work on another project when working for as a truck driver. Because of this, driving can become monotonous fairly quickly, especially on long trips spanning over several days. Luckily, there are many options that can help pass time and add a little extra productivity to your drive.

  1. Learn a new language. With all the time spent next to a stereo system, you might as well put those speakers to use. Check out tapes or CDs that you can pop into the stereo and learn a new language. You’ll have plenty of uninterrupted time to listen and lots of privacy to practice speaking aloud. After you’ve mastered a new language, test your proficiency by listening to a news station in that language. Even if you work all your life as a truck driver in the Midwest, it never hurts to learn an extra language. You never know when you may need it!
  2. Listen to a book.  Experienced commuters will let you know that one of the best uses of driving time is to listen to an audiobook. One of the easiest ways is to rent an audiobook from your local library and pop the tapes or CDs into the stereo. Another option is to download an audiobook onto a portable music player, such as an iPod, though those will add up quickly. Check out daily deals on audiobooks or check out websites like audible.com to sign up for a monthly subscription. With a variety of ways to listen, you’re sure to find one that works best for you.
  3. Locate a news source. Long trips can feel very isolating. Check out local news stations to keep up-to-date on not only traffic, but current events and important issues in your area. You can also download podcasts, if you prefer, utilizing your portable music player. There’s a podcast for almost every category from Games & Hobbies to World History.
  4. Check out new music. We’ve all got our favorite songs, but there are only so many times you can listen to “Bohemian Rhapsody” before even that masterpiece becomes repetitive. Give the seek button on the truck’s stereo a try. If you normally listen to Top 40 Hits, switch to classic rock for a few minutes. Alternative lovers might want to give country a chance. The best part is you can always change the station back to your preferred setting.
  5. Get in a workout. Surprisingly, there are actually a few exercises you can do while driving to help combat on-the-road weight gain. The easiest move is to tense the abdominal muscles for a set amount of time. Try tensing and releasing for 10 seconds at a time and work your way up to one minute. You’ll be on your way to sporting a six-pack, as well as delivering a shipment. It’s all in a day’s work!
  6. Roll down the windows. Fresh air is just a glass pane away. Let a breeze in the truck to air out the cab, after a lunch, or to enjoy the scents as you drive past a bakery. It’s possible to feel disconnected or stuck on the road, but driving with the windows down for a while will revitalize you and break up the drive a little.
