Pay attention. This might have been your parents’ catch phrase when you were growing up. Always be aware of what is happening around you and your vehicle at all times. A little bit of attention can go a long way in preventing damage and accidents.

Look ahead. A major cause of all collisions is not looking far enough ahead while on the road. Be sure to pay attention to your immediate surroundings as well as what might be coming your way in the miles ahead. Aim to look about 12-15 seconds in front of you, or as far as you can see.

Leave enough space. Stopping can take a lot of time and distance and can be influenced by many variables such as whether your trailer is full or empty. Coming to a full stop at highway speeds takes about a quarter of a mile. At lower speeds, it takes closer to about a block. You can prevent big problems by looking ahead and allowing adequate space.

Note driving challenges.  Look for hills and curves that are upcoming in your travels and any potential challenges to maintaining a safe and consistent speed. Signs and traffic signals are especially important to look for. They will warn you of changing road conditions, such as construction and lane closures.

Use your mirrors. This may be the simplest tip, and encompasses all the tips from above. if you are constantly checking your mirrors, you’re actively looking and assessing your current driving conditions. This also helps for safe driving challenges like changing lanes, merging onto freeways, and maneuvering in close quarters.
