Bio Diesel Use Increased Across the Country This Winter | Bay and Bay Transportation offers truck driving jobs in Eagan, MN and surrounding areas

It looks like the colder weather might finally be behind us (knock on wood), but it still created quite a few problems for the truck drivers of Bay & Bay Transportation. One of the biggest challenges during the cold weather was faced by drivers of Bio Diesel trucks. One main characteristic of bio fuels is that they attract moisture, so it has been a challenge for many truck drivers to keep the tanks full.

An increase in moisture in the fuel tank of a truck can increase gelling of fuel and the potential for algae growth. Obviously, this could create many problems when it comes to the maintenance and health of your truck. There are a few steps you can take to combat the moisture attraction of your bio fuel.

Keep tanks full, regardless of season. Make sure when your truck is parked that the gas gauge is pointed towards “F.” It is harder for moisture to form in the tank when there’s already something occupying the space.

Keep the engine as warm as possible. Plug in the truck when possible. If you are unable to plug in, use the APU to keep the engine as warm as possible when not in use.

Be sure to note the fuel’s protection level. Most levels are noted on the fuel pump, but the fuel desk can tell you as well. Depending on the location, some fuel stations may not treat their fuel to upper Mid-West extreme temperature standards (we’re looking at you, Texas).

Knowing the fuel protection level of your bio diesel truck can mean the difference being stranded or making a delivery on time. Use approved additives to ensure that no water enters the injection system.
