Staying Connected to Family as a Long Haul Truck Driver

Bay & Bay Transportation values family whether within the job or at home.

Bay & Bay Transportation values the hard work that each of our truck drivers put into their jobs. From quick daily runs to long hauls, our drivers are the reason that we thrive and continue to grow. The transportation industry is not an easy career to take on. It is a solitary job that can take you away from your family for an extended period of time.

We want our drivers to stay connected to their families as much as possible, so we’ve compiled a list of tips and ideas to maintain that connection with each member of your family.

Truck Driver Family Tips

Go old school. Send postcards from your stops on the road. This is an especially great idea for the children at home, as they can map out your route from the places you’ve visited. Post cards are something they can always keep and a quick and easy item if show and tell day is coming up!

Carve out some telephone time. Any relationship needs more than just written communication. Though quick texts and emails are convenient, you miss out on the subtleties that you pick up in verbal conversations. Schedule some time when you are not driving to have an actual conversation with your loved ones at home. Remind your family that you are only ever a phone call away.

Get high-tech. The hardest part about being away from family is the small, everyday occurrences that you miss in each other’s lives. Traveling is of great interest to many people. You might want to consider starting a blog detailing the adventures you encounter on the road. Industry peers, family, and travel-lovers may all sit ready to hear your tales from the road.

With so many recent advancements in technology, there are plenty of ways for truck drivers to stay in touch with family and loved ones. You can carry as many or as few electronic gadgets that fit your space and your budget. With video calls available through phones, tablets, and laptop computers, you can see your family and barely miss anything while you’re away.

It’s still important though to talk to your employer about big events upcoming in your family life, such as graduations, weddings, and other events. Technology can make up for a lot of things, but big events are still hard to miss. Talk to your employer and work out your schedule before major life events sneak up on you.
