Are Dallas, TX, Transportation Companies Headed for a Steep Falloff Following an Overheated 2018?

January 14th, 2019 · No Comments

If you were looking for a hotspot for transportation companies in 2018, Dallas, TX, was probably near the top of your list. Early last summer the Dallas freight market was leading the country with strong spring and summer driving jobs and refrigerated transportation.

It’s no surprise to Bay & Bay Transportation. We understand just how an important a crossroads Dallas is when it comes to specialized transportation services needed to move the massive amount of freight coming out of the west coast ports.

The spring and summer wave of warmer weather-related driving jobs gave way to holiday-related work as importers rushed to avoid another wave of tariffs between China and the United States. Around $200 billion worth of items were affected as the Trump administration’s 10-percent tariff hike took effect in September. It forced retailers to rush to avoid tariff-related price hikes for the Christmas holiday season. Meanwhile, experts believe the real impact will hit when a 25-percent tariff is enforced beginning this month.

The issue now for Bay & Bay and a number of other transportation companies is just how steep a potential drop-off in volume could we be in store for as the tariff’s take hold? The demand for driving jobs in the Dallas freight market appeared to be at, or nearly at full capacity in 2018.
The implications are huge because Dallas-Fort Worth’s top trade partner country is China. Trade between China and DFW in 2017 was valued at a little more than $23 billion according to the Dallas Regional Chamber.
There are a little more than 30 Chinese companies with major manufacturing operations sites in the DFW area. That’s a lot of machinery, electronic parts, furniture, toys, games and sports equipment that must be handled by brokerage services as it’s hauled in and out of the region.
Bay & Bay is doing its best no matter what the new year holds. We’re also looking for some good people to fill driving jobs too. We reward our qualified truck driving talent with late model equipment and competitive compensation for local and over the road drivers nationwide.
More and more owner operated truck drivers are discovering why Bay & Bay is known as a quality driven tradition among transportation companies.
